Not Perfect, but Not Awful Either

The last couple days I've intended to not drink.  And then the end of the day rolls around, I'm at my wits end with a screaming child going through an intense clingy phase, and I go against what I've been planning all day and have a drink.  Why is that?

Tonight was a bit of a different story, I'm traveling for work and so for once have the entire evening to myself.  I once again intended not to drink.  I thought about ordering some takeout, but decided to head out given I'm in the middle of a major metropolitan city right now, and it's always fun to dine at a good restaurant.  I ended up choosing a sushi spot a few blocks away, and after perusing the menu I decided to order a sake.

Same. Old. Routine.

But the difference tonight is I stopped after one.  I left the restaurant, and while I had a very fleeting thought of stopping to buy some wine, it passed quickly and I headed back to my hotel.  I also had a fleeting thought to stop and buy some chocolate, but that too passed quickly as soon as I stepped out of the restaurant.

There's a minibar, but I'm somehow not at all tempted.  And a beautiful bar downstairs serving up what I am sure are fancy cocktails.  Again, not tempted.  What is different about this night than every other night at home where I never stop after one?  Is it that it's less available? Is it that I have a big day tomorrow and don't want to sabotage myself?  Understanding this could unlock quite a lot.

6 out of 9

Since January 1st, I've been taking a break from alcohol.  This time, I even shared the fact that I'm doing it with S and with another friend.  It's the 9th today, and assuming I don't drink this evening (which I'm not planning to), I'll be 6 for 9 days.  One of the three drinking days I stopped after 1.5 glasses of wine, but the other two days I had 3-5 drinks.  I woke up the next morning feeling a bit meh, not totally hungover or anything (the drinks were over probably 4-5 hours), but both these nights I woke up in the middle of the night, probably when the sugar/carb rush wore off.  I am happy to report the 6 sober nights I have slept wonderfully, uninterrupted, through the night.  No sweats, no strange dreams, just sweet, blissful sleep. My goal this week is to make it at least until Saturday, and then go a full 7 days without drinking.  And then 7 may turn into 10, which may turn into 20, which may turn into 40 and beyond. Self, stay strong an...

Sober Week + Nutrition

Despite being on lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19, my sobriety goals have actually been going pretty well.  I've been drinking less, and minus some slip ups here and there (which I painfully regret the next morning), overall my consumption has been on the lower end. I also signed up with a nutrition coach, and not so shockingly, she suggested that I eliminate alcohol to help with my health and weight loss goals.  Alcohol is empty calories, and is a sure fire way to keep extra weight around. To fully commit to my nutrition goals, I am planning to do another sober week this week.  I've happily been losing about 1-1.5 lbs per week since starting with the coach, and I wonder if cutting out booze will kick that up some. My goal is to drop 35-40 lbs from my heaviest weight.  Every little bit counts! Instead of wine, gin, or whiskey, I plan to drink kombucha, coconut water, or plain water.  Let's see how it goes!

SW Recap

It was over a week ago that I decided to do a sober week.  In short, I feel great.  I didn't stop drinking 100%, but beside one day, I didn't have more than 2 drinks any day, and most days it was 0 or 1.  I have been waking up clear headed, energized, and feeling good.  My workdays have gone well too -- they've been full and busy, but I've felt engaged and ready to tackle them head on. Another thing I've been doing is listening to a meditation/hypnosis program every evening that is focused on quitting alcohol.  I can't say if that's helping as well, but I'm going to believe it is.  So this would technical be week 2, day 2, and I'm planning to keep up my non-drinking habits.  In addition, I signed up with a nutrition coach, and I'm down about 2-3 lbs just this week. Good luck self, you can do it.
